I was recently sent some tea samples from Choi time a company that imports specialty teas from China.

I was sent four types of tea, Jasmine Green Tea Pearls, Thousand Year Red, Exotic Mixed Flowers and Damask Rose Tea. Those of you who know me will know that my dad lived in Beijing for two years while I was in Sixth Form. While he was out there we came and stayed with him in Beijing, (See photos here!) We spent a lot of time buying tea from all over China, of which we still have a lot still to get through!

This is just a sample of the tea we have, we have a whole cupboard with teas from around the world!

The first tea I tried was the Jasmine Green Tea Pearls.

The first thing that struck me about these pearls was the delicateness of the jasmine scent. The Choi Time tea is made from green lu-cha tea leaves. During the drying process the leaves are naturally scented with thousands of jasmine blossoms.

I made 6 cups with the same leaves, the tea was perfectly flavoured every time. I didn’t even get a hint of that horrid bitter taste, which to me is a sign of a quality tea.

The second tea was the Thousand Year Red.

These types teas are my favourite. Add the water to your mug/teapot first and watch the bulb unfurl into a beautiful flower right in front of your eyes. It never gets old! I always get them out when I have friends round! Even coffee drinkers want one!

The thousand year red is made from white needle green tea leaves, naturally scented with jasmine, and hand rolled.

The green tea flavour was milder than the jasmine pearls but it was still lovely and refreshing.

You wouldn’t think you could beat the thousand year red but the next tea really stole the show, and was something new to me! Giant flowering Tea Bulbs

Egg shaped and very peculiar looking, these bulbs opened up into floral daisy chain!

It sat at the bottom of the tea pot for a little while, then suddenly it came to life, floated up and out emerged some lovely exotic flowers daisy chained together!

This was by far the most impressive tea in terms of visual impact but I was left disappointed at the strength of the tea it produced. I was hard pressed to detect any flavour. I left it to steep for a good 10 minutes and could barely detect a thing. Perhaps its because we are in an area of particularly hard water, or that I prefer strong teas over mild ones but couldn’t help but feel a little let down by such an impressive looking tea.

The final tea I tried was the one I was most looking forward to, Damask Rose Tea.

It had a lovely scent of turkish delight and english gardens. It even gave a strong colour to the water. The flavour was delicate if a little too delicate for my tastes but it becomes stronger the more you drink.

I recently went into Fortnum and Mason and saw that they were selling bulb teas for £75! If you want to impress your friends with some authentic, award winning imported tea then enter the code ‘femgeek‘ at checkout and get 10% off your order!

Catherine Ryan Hyde – Second Hand Heart

My second review for the Summer Reading Challenge. Although its not really summer any more :(

The story revolves around a 19 year old girl who has lived a very sheltered life having been born with a heart with only one ventricle. She has spent most of her life not being like the other children and being constantly monitored by her over protective mother. As a result, Vida, is very honest and has a different view on life, because as she says, she knows she’s going to die soon.

This all changes when she gets a heart in a heart transplant. The heart belonged to Lorrie, Richards wife. He finally meets Vida a short time after the transplant when Vida immediately falls in love with him. At that point I felt the story could become a bit perverse – The character Vida is portrayed as a small childlike 19 year old while Richard is a 30 something year old man, so you can understand why I thought it might become a bit perverse!

The story doesn’t proceed how you expect it to though and Vida begins to grow up. There are many things you don’t expect to happen and I think the end of the book (which I wont give away) was an absolutely perfect way to finish such a charming story.

The book is written in diary form, by Vida at first then Richard begins to write a journal of events from his point of view too. The story is based around the idea of cellular memory, the cells of lorries heart remembering their love for Richard and as a result of this Vida falls in love with Richard too.

I’m not usually into soppy love stories, but this wasn’t soppy at all. I think the science takes away the romanticism for me – which is a good thing. If you don’t like soppy romance books you will definitely like this but if you love romance books that will make you cry you probably wont appreciate this as much.

Discount Code Goodness

discounts

When I decide to go out for a meal or plan to buy something new I always always look for someway to get money off! I only buy things when their on offer you see. Its why I have three pots of vegan boullion – although it is impossible to find!

Having just graduated I know a lot about discount codes and actually (quite sadly) know the one for dominos off by heart (NRPHWAO) whether or not it still works I don’t know. Although its probably better to go here if you want real dominos discount codes as opposed to ones I remember from a few months back!

There are several restaurants that always have offers! Strada, Pizza Express and of course my favourite, pizza express voucher’s!

As you can probably tell I’m reviewing Voucher Hub. A site I’ve used quite often in the past my favorite thing being that you don’t have to go through some convoluted process in order to get the discount code, its right there on the page for you to try out quickly.

Its definitely worth stopping by and seeing what they have available before you make any purchases. You might just save yourself a few pennies.

Dan Brown – The Lost Symbol

As I’m now officially a commuter I’ve easily finished reading my first book from the summer reading challenge I posted about here

Dan Brown, The Lost Symbol. I’ve read and enjoyed all of Dan Browns books, although some stand out as being much better than the others. This one I have mixed feelings about. I’m a slow reader at the best of times but this book seemed to go on forever!

The whole story takes place over a period of 10 hours. When certain events do take place you find yourself making silly expressions and noises while you try to read as quickly as you can to find out the next piece of the puzzle. Reading this book really did make for some tense moments!

I don’t wish to give away any of the plots twists and although some (especially for me at least having read all of Dan Browns other books) were predictable I was still shocked by some of the events in this book.

The story revolves around the Masons one of the most misunderstood ‘cults’ (for lack of a better word) and their protection of the Secret Mysteries. Unfortunately for the masons a sinister character has infiltrated their various levels and is after the lost symbol which will lead him to the secrets. Through a clever and gruesome series of events Robert Langdon, our famous professor is brought in on the action along with a few other characters who all have their roles to play in the complicated alliances and deceptions. Robert Langdon is in possession a piece of the puzzle, given to him by a dear friend and is caught right in the middle of it. There’s even a helicopter involved in this book!

As with all Dan Brown he combines fact and fiction in a way that you want to go out and research the information yourself to find out how true it all is. I love the way he presents views for certain arguments in his books which to me, makes it a very unbiased read but I’m sure others would disagree with me.

If your a fan or not of the Dan Brown books you really should try to read this, but if it is your first time reading a Dan Brown book read the Da Vinci code first, its by far the best in the series!

Rating: 4/5 Buy on Amazon.co.uk
Pros: Felt much more action packed than previous books. Some very tense moments and awesome twists with some unlikely allies
Cons: Slow to get started. I found myself skipping some blocks of text too

Summer Reading Challenge

Its probably a bit too late for me to lounge around the Pool in Bahrain and read. I’m in Bahrain at the moment and in fact its far too hot to sit outside and read, the temperature is about 45c most days!

However I’m looking for another holiday for myself and Greg to go on together so I shall definitely need something to read on that trip as finding a book for this holiday was very unsuccessful! Being a creative person I judge a book by its cover; fonts, photoshop work, the lot!

Heres what I have chosen:
The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown
Bryant & May on the Loose by Christopher Fowler
Second Hand Heart by Catherine Ryan Hyde
E Squared by Matt Beaumont

They’re all different genres that I think I will like – I agonised for ages! I take after my mother who swears she will never read a book recommended by a girly magazine like Glamour or Good Housekeeping!! I tend to agree with her logic judging by the lack of actual things to read in magazines nowadays!

Why not comment on the entry yourself and try your hand at a book review! (This time you wont get red pen all over it!)
